I'm interested in finding out how to introduce potential step children to an adopted child. The young child does not know they are adopted but the step children do know. We're not ready to tell our young child that they are adopted, their not ready yet! However, I'm worried that if anything happens to upset the step children they may try to hurt the parents by telling the adopted child they are actually adopted? How do we prevent this from happening but also not make a big deal out of it??? |

I think that you should tell your adopted children that they are adopted. It would be better to find out from you that they are adopted then step siblings. I have two adopted children and they have always known that they were adopted. They have met their birth parents and have photos of them. The fact of the matter is that I didn't give birth to them and they know that. My husband and I love them unconditionally. Adoption is not so taboo as it was years ago. Depending on their ages you tell them what is age appropriate. I have been to adoption seminars and children who find out later in life are very resentful and angry for not having known. |

Fortunately, or unfortunately, letting them know about the adoption is the only solution here, whether they are "ready" or not. Better the information come from you as loving parents, than from somewhere else. Kids are kids and can't keep secrets very well if they don't understand the consequences... You will tear yourself up wondering if they "spill the beans" at an inappropriate time or in an inappropriate way. |
